DNS Manager FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is DNS?

DNS maps human readable computer names to a computer "IP" address (numbers) needed to make the Internet work.

Is this for me?

If you have one or more domain names or would like to get a domain name, and have a server with a static IP address, you can use LaneChange.Net’s DNS server service to point domain name records to your servers! Host web pages and accept e-mail for your domain right off your server. Web servers and e-mail servers need to be installed and configured on your machine(s) and is not part of our DNS server service.

Outsourcing your DNS to is also great for those that have different service providers, providing services for their domain. For example, if you have one company handling your e-mail requirements, and another handling web services and don’t feel comfortable giving up your entire domain name resolution to one of those companies, you can set your domain name up on our DNS servers and have complete control over all your hostnames!

What is LaneChange.Net's DNS Server Manager?

The LaneChange.Net DNS Server Manager offers you self service management of your DNS records. It gives you the ability to manage your own domain records via a web based interface. This removes the complexity of owning and operating your own DNS servers and is great if you run your own servers for things like web, e-mail or ftp. The LaneChange.Net DNS Manager extends the power of  DNS to you in a user friendly, web based environment.

How do I sign up for this service?

How much does it cost?’s DNS Server Manager costs $20 per year, per domain. If you register or transfer your domain name to, you can get access to our DNS Manager for the reduced price of $7.95 per year, per domain name.

Why are the domains I add to the DNS Manager on “Hold”?

Any domains you add to your user profile will NOT automatically be activated on our DNS servers, but instead will be placed in a “Hold” state. New domains added to your profile must be activated.

To activate your domain from the DNS Manager, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the domain name you would like to activate
  2. You now see a link that says Click Here to Activate your domain. Have your credit card handy, click on the link and in minutes your domain name will be live on our distributed network of DNS servers.

You can still add and delete records while your domain is on Hold. Once you activate your domain, our DNS servers will pickup all the records associated with that domain.

What if I activate my domain and then delete it?

If you should accidentally delete an active domain and then re-add it, your domain will once again be on hold. This means your domain information will NOT be published on our servers, so be careful when deleting domains in your profile! You will have to contact support to have your domain manually reactivated or pay another activation fee.

How long does it take for a newly registered domain name to be visible?

New domain name registration normally take 24 to 36 hours to be picked up by the Internet’s root name servers. Please take this into account when setting up new services with us.

If I transfer a domain to you, will the domains Name Server pointers automatically point to LaneChange.Net too?

A domain name transfer does NOT automatically change your domains Name Server pointers. You must manually change them to point to our servers either with your loosing registrar before the transfer completes, or after, using our Domain Name Manager.
